Cycle

Students need to associate Tuesday and Thursday with a double period of Physical Education and Monday, Wednesday, and Friday as Health and Etended Learning days.  We will follow the Mon-Fri. Schedule even if school days are missed due to snow-days or holidays!

Grading System

There will be a daily participation grade given to your child each time they have class.  If the student is dressed appropriately (a complete uniform) and performs to the best of their ability, he/she will receive a "5" which is the same as 100%.  Infractions such as chewing gum, incomplete uniform, unexceptable behavior, or lack of effort will result in a lesser number than a 5; i.e  4=80%, 3=60%, etc.

Other grades entered into the students average seperate from their daily grade will be the final results of "The Presidential Physical Fitness Testing" and tumbling & jumprope skills testing.  The fitness testing will be entered during one 9-week marking period and the jumprope & tumbling skills will be on the other.

Presidential Fitness Testing

Every Spring and Fall the PPF testing will be administered.  Every child in Spring Cove Middle School will be tested once a year.  Those who have phys. ed. during the 1st semister will be tested in the fall of the year and the 2nd semister students will be tested in the spring.

Every student must complete the battery of 6 tests to receive a complete grade and be considered for a national or presidential award.  National Standards have already been established by the PPF Council.  These standards are pre-determined according to age and sex.  The following tests will be administered:

Sit-Ups:  Measures abdominal strength.

Pull-Ups (boys) or Flexed-Arm-Hang (girls):  Measures upper body   strength.

Long Jump:  Measures lower body strength.

Shuttle-Run:  Measures quickness and agility.

600 Yard Run:  (Middle distance run)  Measures speed and endurance.

Mile Run:  (Long distance)  Measures endurance.

Those students who score at or above the 50 %-tile on each and every test will receive a National Award.  A Presidential Award may be earned by obtaining the 85 %-tile  on each and every test.

Gym/Locker Room Rules

These Rules Must Be Observed By All Students:

1.  Demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.

2.  Be cooperative with your classmates and teachers.

3.  Always show respect for self and others.

4.  Listen and follow all directions.

5.  Be on time.

6.  Use appropriate language.

7.  When you are absent, students are responsible for all make up work.

8.  All students will remain in the locker room until told to leave by the teacher.

9.  If you are injured during class, let your teacher know as soon as possible.

10.  No food, drink, gum, or jewelry allowed in the gym during class.

11.  Locks will be issued only upon request.

12.  Showers are provided and all boys need to bring a towel.  Personal hygene must be given special consideration.

13.  No running or horseplay in the locker room.

Excused/Unexcused Absense

Unless students present a doctor's excuse to the office or one of the physical education teachers, they must be in uniform prepared to participate in that days activities.  If the student displays signs of illness or relates to myself or Mrs. Gorman an inability to participate in that days activity, we'll make every consideration to relieve them.

Excused absenses do not need to be made up.  If the activity necessitates, a make-up date will be scheduled.  Otherwise, the student will be marked "excused" and will not be held against them.  Unexcused absenses will result in a grade of "0".
