There is an old saying that says, "there is power in numbers, the more the better". This is the rationale behind group counseling. As human beings, we are able to handle our issues more effectively when we realize that others are facing similar issues. The Guidance Office at Spring Cove Middle School is happy to offer group counseling services. Groups are offered strictly on a need basis. Groups are formed based on the existing needs of the student popluation. Below is some general information about group counseling.
Group Counseling
Groups provide a safe environment in which you can experiment with new behaviors, improve communication skills, and receive feedback from other students with similar concerns and interests. Some groups focus on specific skills and themes while others provide support for specific groups of students. Groups typically meet once a week for a period of 6 weeks. However, each group can determine how often and for how long it will meet.
WHY WOULD SOMEONE CHOOSE GROUP COUNSELING?
Some of the benefits of group are:
-
allows you to be less isolated as you work through difficult situations
-
helps you to realize you're not alone in your struggles
-
provides multiple perspectives on issues and how you are seen by others
-
provides an ideal means for practicing and learning new interpersonal behaviors
-
helping others helps you to see your own issues differently and to feel you have something to offer others
Research has documented group therapy's power in helping people with many types of issues. If you want to learn more about group counseling services at Spring Cove Middle School, feel free to contact Mrs. Smith at (814) 224-2106.
