Jr. Dragon End Season in defeat to Westmont

Our Jr. Dragons (2-6) held their own to an undefeated Westmont Hilltop (8-0) Jr. High football team for a quarter and a half, but the Westies size and speed, the Dragon turnovers and pentatities, and a poor playing conditions lead to a Dragon defeat 33–8. “I was real proud with how we played all day versus this tough Westmont team. We knew they were undefeated and have a very potent team. We came out and play exceptionally hard to start the game (One of the areas where we struggled all year), we moved the ball well offensively and played solid defense. . But in the end, their size and speed, and our team mistakes lead to our defeat,” commented Coach Kitt.

Offensively, our Dragon’s were lead by Shane Cafferty who had 96 yards on 26 carries and the Dragons only touchdown, and Cassey McConahy who had 20 yards on 8 carries. Skylar McGreggor completed three of eight passes for 39 yards. McConahy caught two of those passes for 26 yards and Drew Ebersole caught the other for 13 yards.

“Even though our record does not reflect a successful season, I feel we really had one. We continued to work hard and get better in all aspects of football up until the very end. Our schedule and the Laurel Highlands was really tough this year; of our six losses, five of those teams ended their season with 2 or less losses,” continued Coach Kitt.

“On behalf of the entire Jr. High coaching staff, we would like to thank all our players in our Jr High system for their hard work this year. We would also like to thank the parents, grandparents, family and all our fans for the support and assistance they gave us all year,” concluded Coach Kitt.

Jr. Dragon Lose in Defensive Battle

In a game that feature two solid defensive efforts, the Spring Cove Jr. Dragons suffered defeat at the hand of Central Cambria 20 – 0. Because of poor special teams play and Dragon turnovers, most of the Red Devils possession started on the Dragon half of the field. The Dragon defense was able to thwart most Red Devils possession, except for one drive in the first quarter that started on the Dragon 18 yard line, one in the third quarter that started on the 24 yard line, and a late score against the Dragon reserve players.

“Our defense really stepped up for us tonight,” commented Coach Kitt. “It seemed like everytime they (Central Cambria) got the ball, they were on our half of the field via a turnover or poor special team play. And on offense, we were never able to get on track again, we could not sustain any drives and our passing didn’t click very often.”

The Dragons were led offensively by Casey McConahy who had 35 yards on 15 carries on the ground and had a pass completion for 20 yards. Brent Ayers also collected 12 yards on his five carries for the Jr. Dragons. Skylar McGreggor only completed four of 20 passes for 65 yards. Jordan Saylor was on the leading receiver catching three passes for 55 yards, Drew Ebersole had one reception for 25 yards and Casey McConahy had the other reception for 5 yards.

The Jr. Dragons will be home under the lights for their final home game of the year tonight (October 20) versus Windber at 7:00 pm at the Roaring Spring Althletic Field. Come out and see your Jr. Dragons play.

Slow Start Dooms Jr. Dragons

The Bedford Jr. Bison’s took their two opening offensive possessions of the game for touchdowns against the Spring Cove Jr. Dragons to create a 14 – 0 advantage in which the Jr. Dragons were never able to overcome and finally defeated 16 - 12.

“We had a very slow start both offensively and defensively,” commented Coach Kitt. “The coaching staff regrouped our squad after they (Bedford) scored their second touchdown, and we played much more inspired football after that. After our regrouping, we played the most aggressive football we’ve played all year. I was also encouraged by the way we fought until the very end. In the past, when we got down by two or more scores, we did not always give our best effort.”

Following the Bison’s second score, the Dragon’s produced a nine-play 58 yard drive capped by a Shane Cafferty 22 yard reception from Skylar McGreggor. Then after a Bison turnover just before the half, the Dragons march 76 yards for a touchdown capped by a Jason Stonerook run for 4 yards. Both converision after touchdown failed to set the halftime score at 14–12.

Jordan Saylor recovered a squib kick at the 26 yard line to open the second half, but the Dragons were held out of the endzone by the Bison after a failed forth down conversion from the four yard line. The Bisons drove the field but was held out of the endzone when Jason Stonerook intercepted the Stock pass, which was marked at the two-yard line. On the Dragons first offensive play, the Bison’s defense tackled Cafferty in the endzone for a safety and set the score at 16–12. Both teams exchanged possession the remainder of the game with no further scoring.

Offensively for the dragons, Shane Cafferty led all ruchers with 48 yards on 12 carries. Casey McConahy had 28 yards on 11 carries. Both Jason Stonerrok and Brent Ayers collected 14 yards rushing. Skylar McGreggor had a successful night at quarter back completing 7 of 14 attemps for 113 yards and a touchdown. Devin Miller led all receivers with 42 yards on his only reception, while Jordan Saylor had 39 yards on two catches and Shane Cafferty had 23 yards on three catches.

Coach Kitt brings his team on the home tonight (October 13) where the Dragons will meet the undefeated Central Cambria team under the lights at 7:00 pm at the Roaring Spring Athletic Field. Hope to see all our fans there.

Panthers Power Past Dragons

The Spring Cove Jr. Dragons football team started out strong in their matchup with Penn Cambria, but succumbed to the Panthers 36-16. The Dragons started the game with an impressive nine play, 58 yard opening drive that was capped by a Derek Forshey to Jordan Saylor 10 yard touchdown throw. The Dragon’s complete the drive with a fake extra point throw from Saylor to Drew Ebersole to take a 8 – 0 lead. The Jr. Dragon defense entered the field and forced a three and out to get the ball back for the offense. But it was all downhill from there!

From there the Dragon offense was plagued with miscues, especially fumbles, that allowed the Panther to gain a 20 – 8 lead late in the first half. The Dragons were able to stage a late second quarter drive that was capped by Casey McConahy 5 yard run. Forshey connected with Shane Cafferty for the two point conversion to end the half with the Dragon’s training 20 – 16. “Our first half turnovers really hurt us, but we were still in the game at halftime,” stated Coach Kitt. “In the second half, our defense did not show up and stop there power running game. They (Penn Cambria) did not have to throw a pass in the second half, but we were not able to stop their run and gave up 16 more points.”

Offensively, the Jr. Dragons were lead on the ground by McConahy who had 76 yards on 17 carries, Ebersole who had 27 yards on eight carries and Devin Miller who had 14 yards on two carries. Forshey complete three passes in eight attempts for 21 yards and a touchdown. Cafferty had two catches for 11 yards while Saylor had the other for the touchdown.

“We need to get back to work and correct our errors. We still have the making of a very good TEAM, if we want to be. But each player must know his assignments and responsibilities and carry them out!” Kitt stated

Coach Kitt will take his team on the road next Thursday (October 6) where the Dragons will take on the Bison’s of Bedford under the lights at 7:00 pm at the Bedford High School Football Stadium. Hope to see all our fans there.

Jr. Dragons Stymied by Rangers

The Spring Cove Jr. High football team travel to Sidman with hopes of being the first Dragon squad to defeat the Rangers on any level in football, but returned home from Forest Hills with their first loss of the season in a 38-0 setback. “Football is a very simple game, it comes down to blocking and tackling. We were able to improve in both areas, but could not meet the same abilities of opponent (Forest Hills),” commented Coach Kitt.

Offensively, the Jr. Dragons could never get on track. The Rangers used nine men upfront to stop the running game, “They had more defenders than we could block,” stated Coach Kitt. And with Derek Forshey, the Dragon starting Quarterback, sitting out a second week with a shoulder injury, the passing game never connected (literally).

Even though the dragons gave up 38 points on the score board, the Dragon Defense only gave up two scores in the game. The Ranger’s defense scored on two interception returns of 35 and 30 yards, and also a fumble return of 47 yards. “Our defense was one of our few high points. We tackled much better than we did in the first two weeks. There are still areas of our defense where we need to improve, but compared to the first two weeks, our defense played much better,” Coach Kitt continued.

Coach Kitt concluded with, “We win as a TEAM, we lose as a TEAM. We must continue to work as a TEAM. We must have 11 players playing as hard as they can every play, like we had our first two weeks. There are many areas where we as a TEAM can continue to improve.”

Coach Kitt will bring his team home next Thursday (Sept. 29) where the Dragons will take on the Panther’s of Penn Cambria under the lights at 7:00 pm at the Roaring Spring Athletic Field. Hope to see all our fans there.

McConahy Lead Jr. Dragons to Dominating Win Over Heights

Casey McConahy scored four times, on runs of 4, 27, 27, and 61 yards, while rushing for 175 yards on six carries to lead the Spring Cove Jr. High football squad to a 41-22 victory over visiting Cambria Heights under the lights at the Roaring Spring Athletic Field. The Dragons also received scoring runs from Brent Ayers, of 15 yard run who ended the day with 50 yards on three carries, and Shane Cafferty, of 1 yard run who had 57 yards on five carries. Drew Ebersole ended his evening with 41 yards on three carries and Sam Berkheimer had 32 yards on nine carries. The Dragons compiled 346 yards in total offense in the first half enroot to a 41-6 half time lead.

“For the second week in a row, we had a very dominating TEAM performance,” Coach Kitt stated. “ Our offensive line did a great job. We kept substituting players in on the offensive line, and they all did a great job. Also, we got many of subs some valuable playing time in the second half, everyone played well when they got their opportunity. ”

Coah Kitt continued to comment , “While there was many positives in game like this, there are still many areas where we need to improve. Our biggest test will come next week when we travel to Forest Hills, I’m not sure if any of our football teams (at any level) have ever beaten them since we entered the Laurel Highlands. Next week could be the first.”

Coach Kitt will take his team on the road next week to Sidman where the Dragons will take on the Ranger’s of Forest Hills at 4:15 pm. Hope to see all our fans there.

Spring Cove 33, Bishop Carroll 6

Jr. Dragons uses TEAM EFFORT to Overcome Huskies

The Spring Cove Jr. High football squad started off their season by scoring on their first offensive play, a 61 yard run by Casey McConahy, enroute to a 33-6 victory over the Huskies of Bishop Carroll. “Even though Casey was the one who took the ball into the endzone, it was a total team effort that got him there. The line did an excellent job blocking while also joined by his backfield partners,” said coach Kitt. “Except for one defensive play, this was the way we played the whole game, A TEAM EFFORT. Each player stepped up when they needed to and we had eleven men playing football every single play.”

McConahy completed a stellar day by gaining 159 yards on 24 carries and scoring four touchdowns. Derek Forshey also had a significant day at quarterback, passing for 60 yards (while going 2 for 5) but rushed for 48 yards on seven carries.

The Dragon defense was the difference in the game, they held the Bishop Carroll run and gun attack to under 100 yards total for the game. “We gave up one long run, and a few very small gains, but the majority of the time we held them for no gain or even a loss. Plus they fumbled their shotgun snap many times that lead to a loss of yardage,” commented Coach Albright.

Coach Kitt was not completly satisfied with this win though, “Even though we did have a dominating performance, there are many areas where we need improvement, better special teams play, more consistant blocking, better tackling and work on our passing game.” Kitt commented that his team will continue to work hard every week getting them ready for varsity action latter in the scholastic careers.

The Spring Cove Jr. High football team will host Cambria Heights next Thurday at 7:00 pm for their home opener.
