Homework in third grade is essential. We will be learning new ideas and concepts every day in class. While I will provide the instruction and guided practice, to really master the material, your child will need to have some time for independent practice as well.
This is where you come in... Homework is one way that you, as the parent, can monitor how your child is progressing. The work sent home will be material that we have already covered and your child should be able to complete it with little or no assistance. What your child needs from you is to monitor that it is complete, the directions were all followed, and it was done correctly. It is very important that you check the homework once it is completed so that you can help your child with any misunderstanding. Practice makes perfect is only true if the practice is done correctly.
You can expect homework each night except Friday. I will not grade every homework assignment, but I will always check to see that it is complete. My policy is to accept two pieces of incomplete work each nine weeks before I start giving consequences. The third time that homework in not completed, your child will stay in at recess time to complete the work and then lose 5 additional minutes. Each additional time homework is not done will result in a similar consequence and I will also notify the parents that this is becoming a problem. I will thank you in advance for your support in this area of your child's education!!
