SUITABLE BOOKS FOR SUPER READERS

This is an annotated bibliography of books for young students reading well above grade level.

HIGH LEVEL BOOKS

APPROPRIATE FOR YOUNG READERS

Children who quickly and smoothly master the reading task are soon able to “read almost anything.”  However,  it is important to consider that their interest and experience level is still that of young children.  Therefore, it is necessary to help them select books that match not only their reading ability but also their experience level.  Here are some suggestions:

The Grand Escape    By Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

An animal adventure story about Marco and Polo, two house cats who have had enough of that.  They decide to set off to see the outside world.

The Boxcar Children    By Gertrude Chandler Warner

This is an extensive series of stories about a family of orphans who are determined to stay together and make it on their own.  If a child gets “hooked” on a series it presents a lot of reading opportunities.

Miracles on Maple Hill    By Virginia Sorensen

The story of a family’s move from Pittsburgh to rural Maple Hill, Pennsylvania.

The Hundred Dresses     By Eleanor Estes

This is a sweet, sad story about the importance of being kind and the dangers of bullying.

Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days    By Stephen Manes

Milo thinks he has found the answer to all his problems:  a book that tells him how to become a perfect person.  The book follows his hilarious attempts to do exactly what the books says he must to become perfect.

Freckle Juice    By Judy Blume

Andrew Marcus will do anything to get freckles.

The Enormous Egg    By Oliver Butterworth

Nate lives on the family farm in Freedom, New Hampshire.  One morning he looks in the henhouse and finds the biggest egg he has ever seen.  When Nate’s enormous egg hatches the whole world is in for a big surprise.

Bunnicula    By Deborah and James Howe

The Howes have written several books about animal detectives Howard the dog and Chester the Cat.  In this story they solve the mystery of a vampire bunny.

The Reluctant Dragon    By Ernest H. Shepard

The story of a boy who befriends a gentle dragon.
