Homework Information

Homework Information    c

We assign homework in Kindergarten to reinforce the skills we are teaching.  Homework should only require a small amount of time to complete, perhaps 10-20 minutes and it is not assigned daily.   Homework is expected to be returned the day after assigned unless otherwise noted.  Parents should assist their child with the homework as needed but have the child complete the actual assignment.  The following types of homework may be assigned throughout the year.  Please help your child check his/her bookbag daily for assignments.

Phonics Books:   This homework will be assigned with the start of each new letter, almost weekly, except for review and testing weeks.  The student is to find 3 pictures that begin with the letter written at the top of the page and cut them out and glue them in the book.  The book is to be returned to school the next day where he/she will name the letter, make the sound associated with it and then name the three pictures in the book.  Old catalogs, magazines, or newspaper ads may be some of the items used to locate the pictures.

Printing Books:   This book will be sent home weekly with each new letter to practice the correct printing formation of each letter.  A letter formation reference page is stapled inside the front cover of the book for your assistance.

Show and Tell:   A small slip of paper will be sent home as a notice of “Show and Tell” for the following day.  It will have listed the beginning sound of the item that is to be brought to school.  Your child should be prepared to give 3 clues in sentence form about the item to help the class in guessing what the item is before it is shown.  Please assist your child in finding easy to carry items that fit into a bookbag and do not easily break.  An example for the letter S may be:  “It is something you plant in the ground.  It might grow flowers or vegetables.  You need to water them to make them grow.”  (Answer: seeds)

Share a Book:   During the last half of the year students will be asked to bring in a book to “share with the class”.  Perhaps it is a book the student has almost memorized and that is fine.  But they need only to be able to look at the pictures and retell the story using complete sentences.  Each student will bring in one book per month.  The day to bring the book will be highlighted on a calendar sent home according to what color table the student sits at.

Guided Reading Books:   The students will bring home “Guided Reading Books” part way into the school year.  These are easy readers that we have practiced for several days in school already before sending home.  Your child should read it to you and you are asked to initial that they have read it with you and return it to school in the provided plastic pouch.  We also appreciate reading your comments on the enclosed sheet that you initial.
