Reading Tips
Home and family involvement enhances the work done at school. Your child will be bringing home the third grade reading book and other books to read to you. Here are some tips you can use while reading with your child.
1.
Find a quiet place.
2.
When your child comes to a tricky or difficult part in a book, please remind them to use the strategies that they are learning at school. These strategies include:
a.
Thinking about the story (ask "what would make sense?")
b.
Checking the pictures for clues (as the year goes on the picture support will be less and less)
c.
Look for prefixes or endings added to the word. Cover these and figure out the base word and then add the beginning and ending parts.
d.
Looking for familiar chunks in the word
e.
Asking whether what they read sounded right, looked right, and made sense
3.
Please focus on what your child is doing well.
4. Always support and praise their efforts.
5. Don't be afraid to offer an explanation for new words your child encounters, and don't be afraid to admit that you don't know the word either! Looking up a word together can be a valuable learning experience because grown-ups aren't expected to know everything either and can learn new things from books too!
