Spelling

There will be 15 spelling words given each week.  The first ten of the 15 words will have a common skill.  The last 5 words will be high frequency words that will be displayed on the classroom word wall.

At the beginning of each week, a pretest will be given before the new spelling list is passed out.  After the pretest, the new spelling list will be passed out and the students will check their own papers and correct any mistakes they made with a colored pencil or pen.

Note:  If your child misses 3 or less on the spelling pretest, he/she will be receiving a challenge spelling list to study those words for that week.

We will be practicing the 15 regular and challenge spelling words, and other words that have the same skill, all week by reading books and large chart poems and doing spelling activities and games.

On the last day of each week, we will be taking the final regular and/or challenge spelling test that will be collected and checked.  It will be placed in a test folder and sent home every two weeks with all of the other tests.

      Spelling Homework

The spelling word sort homework is sorting the words according to what they have in common.  A spelling word sort worksheet will be sent home at the beginning of each week.  It is due the next day.   If it is not turned in the next day, it will be marked as a day late and made up during recess time.

The following are spelling homework ideas:

Study Strategy:
