Homework
Homework Policy
Homework! It seems that younger children can’t wait until they are old enough to have homework, while older children wish it would disappear. For most first graders, this is the first year that they have had homework on a regular basis. Homework in first grade is about reviewing what has already been taught in the classroom and most importantly, developing responsibility in our children. They are responsible for getting the assignment in their bookbags and getting it home, completing it with a parent’s guidance, and then returning it on the day it is due. These skills will help not only help your child now, but throughout his/her life!
HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?
Your first grader should not spend more that 15 to 20 minutes each evening on their assigned paper homework. If your child is spending more time than this on a regular basis, please let me know. Please to do not allow yourself to get into a battle with your child. Send me a note and I will have them finish it here at school. While it is my goal to instill responsibility and increase you child’s attention span, we all have our “not so good” days.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Most of the homework that is assigned at the beginning of the school year is designed to be done with family members. If your child seems to be able to complete the assignment independently, it is still a great idea for you to check your child’s work. If you are wondering whether or not you should correct your child’s mistakes, the answer is yes. Point out your child’s mistake in a positive way and take the opportunity to re-teach the task and clarify the problem. If you want to make me aware of the specific problem, feel free to send me an e-mail or write me a note, and I will get back in touch with you as soon as possible. Unless I have specified a different date, homework is due the following day.
HOMEWORK SCHEDULE
**Subject to change at any time!**
Guided Reading and SCORE 1 books will be sent home everyday unless otherwise noted.
MONDAY
– Spelling – The weekly spelling list is handed out and your child will need to complete a worksheet practicing their new word list for the week.
TUESDAY
- Spelling - Now that your child is more familiar with the words for the week, they are now going to be asked to unscramble the words and print them correctly beside the scrambled version. If you see that they are having difficulty with this concept, I have found it helpful to cut out the letters of the words or use magnetic letters so that your child can actually move the letters around to create one of their spelling words.
WEDNESDAY
- Vocabulary - Once we have started our story of the week, your child will be given a list of words that they should know and will be tested on at a later date. They do not need to be able to spell them, but recognize them. This assignment builds on itself throughout the year. I will keep you up to date as to what they are responsible for doing at that time. Wednesday is also a night to review your child's spelling words with them for Thursday's pre-test. Information on how spelling tests are handled can be found on the Spelling Page found under your "click-down" menu.
THURSDAY - Math - Often this assignment will be a worksheet that reinforces the skills that have been covered throughout the week in math class. This will also be a day where your child might need to re-practice their spelling words for the re-test on Friday.
FRIDAY
- No assigned homework.
***I hope that this has answered some of the questions that you might have concerning homework for your First Grader. Please remember that you can contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns.***
