Spelling is done on a weekly basis.  The children are given theirnew list on Monday's (unless we are on a shortened week).  Lists normally follow a word family or pattern for the week as well as a few high frequency words.  The children are given a pre-test on Thursday.  If they spell all of their words correctly, they are excused from Friday's test.  If your child does not spell all of their words correctly, they are given a second chance on Friday.

Guided Reading occurs in a small group setting of six or less children setting reading on their own instructional level.  An instuctional level is the level where your child can read 90-94% of the words correctly.  In order to determine the instructional reading level students are accessed at the beginning of the school year using running records and periodically throughout the year to monitor growth.  Guided reading sessions happen daily as teachers coach for reading strategies and move students to increasingly more difficult text as they master these strategies.

Independent Reading is practiced daily with students reading stories at an easier level. This many times occurs during rereading of stories to practice fluency, expression, phrasing, and to gain confidence as a reader.

Teacher Read Aloud is done daily as the teacher reads stories to develop good listening skills, vocabulary and model expression, fluency and comprehension strategies through group discussion.

Shared Reading can be whole, small group, or individual settings where students work with phonemic awareness, word study, and comprehension skills using our own teacher created curriculum.
