Elevator Speeches - Inservice Day August 25, 2008
|
|
Thank you to the following people for sharing their words of inspiration at our district-wide meeting.
Each speaker was rewarded with a $25 Sheetz gas card, with the grand prize of a $50 Sheetz gas card going to Barb Black.
From Parney to Elevator Speeches, it was a "very impactful" meeting!

God once blessed this nation,
and man parceled out the land.
They built a great community,
upon where we now stand.
Three towns came together
and formed a treasure trove.
A place to raise our families –
a district called Spring Cove.
Where children are our future,
they live and learn and play
With dedicated teachers,
and staff to lead their way.
A family-like community,
where no one stands alone.
We look out for each other,
and we’re proud to call it home.

The greatest, funniest, and most memorable stories are stories told about one’s own experience. People often say, “What I did was..” or “When I met him I about…” or “When I heard that I…” or “When that happens to me I…” The Spring Cove School District, a congenial community of families and friends, has shared in creating many such meaningful experiences. It is my privilege to have grown up in the district and to now be working for the district. I have a wealth of influential experiences to draw from as one is frequently called upon to entertain, to offer advice, or to relate. A Martinsburg Elementary principal (and future SCSD superintendent) took me to Ritchey’s Dairy during school hours!! My 9th and 10th grade English teacher never gave me a 100% on a writing assignment! My high school homeroom teacher never allowed talking in his classroom when we were freshmen, but he gradually loosened the reigns as we grew into seniors. My gym teacher made us run every day saying, “Down back, down back, sprint to the end.” And, she could jump rope better than all of her students! My friends and I wanted to quit track, but we couldn’t because we couldn’t bear to see our coach disappointed. It is to those who make up the Spring Cove School District that gratitude must be expressed; they allow for the experiences to be had. The ultimate benefit of being in the Spring Cove School District is the experience of success, failure, freedoms, boundaries, humility, pride… The list could go on for ages!

The Spring Cove School District is a great place for kids! We are a small town district with a proud history of offering exceptional educational opportunities. We are academically focused and emotionally connected. Our buildings provide a safe, clean, caring and well organized place to grow and learn. We employ strong and professional administrators and teachers and have a great support staff to back them up. Our teachers are dedicated to each student as individuals and work extremely hard to help them reach their highest potential. We recognize the importance of partnering with parents and seek community involvement and input. We offer a wide variety of sports programs and after school activities designed to promote group unity and yet develop the strengths and hobbies of the individual student. Our district places high priority on technological advances. We have an ongoing assessment system that supports what is necessary to continue to give good instruction for many years to come. The Spring Cove School District is not just building on education, we are building on the future.

One of the biggest benefits I have seen in my 10 years with the Spring Cove School District is the attitude and manners of the students I have had the opportunity to work with. In particular, I have been an advisor for Central High School’s FBLA chapter since I started teaching at CHS. I have taken part in chaperoning FBLA members on numerous field trips and competitions; some trips required us to stay overnight. At times we work closely with and sometimes even travel with other schools in our region on these outings. We are constantly receiving compliments from advisors and chaperones from the other schools on how well behaved and mannered our students are. Other advisors have had problems and at times their students have put them in tough situations sometimes requiring them to contact their home districts for resolution. This has definitely not been the case for us. Our students are always very helpful and respectful of all as we attend these functions. This is one reason I am proud to say I teach in the Spring Cove School District.

When our family moved to Roaring Spring twenty years ago, we knew very little about the school district into which we were moving, and quite frankly, we weren’t all that concerned with learning more about it. After all, our son, Samuel, was only eight months old. My husband, Dave, had just been hired as pastor of the Bare Memorial Church of God, and at the time, across our denomination, the average length of stay in a pastorate was three years. So checking out the local school district was the last thing on our minds.
However, as we settled into our new home, we made a wonderful discovery. Our church was filled with school teachers! Lots of them! And not just teachers, but staff members and former administrators, too! As we watched these people give whole heartedly of themselves to the children and youth in our church, we knew they were doing the same for the children and youth of the community. So when the time came to register Samuel for school, the decision to enroll him in the Spring Cove School District came easily.
Many of our seminary friends were opting for the current trend of homeschooling or sending their children to private schools. They questioned our decision to send our child to public school. Our response: “You don’t know our school district!” And I must admit, having been a public school teacher in Ohio, I was looking forward to being on the other side of the desk, as a parent volunteer.
Our son, Sam, is now a junior at Juniata College, majoring in mathematics, having attained the dean’s list every semester. We have not once regretted sending him to Spring Cove. The education he received from the dedicated teachers and staff here prepared him well for his college experience. Having been able to take high school courses for college credit, Sam is also a semester ahead of many of his classmates.
Sam isn’t our only child benefiting from a Spring Cove education. Our daughter, Rachael, a senior at Central is now preparing to go to college. Her major – elementary education! What great role models she has had!
We also have a son, Philip, who is a freshman at Central this year. Philip, unfortunately, will not have the opportunity to finish his education at Spring Cove, as Dave has accepted a position with our conference office as Director of Congregational Care. So next June, we will be moving to the outskirts of Harrisburg, but with this move, we will be educating ourselves about potential school districts, the standard having been set by Spring Cove.

“Life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you are going to get.” Unlike a big motion picture, at Central High, you know exactly what you are going to get with the Vocational Department. You will find the Vocational Department to be comprised of highly professional and qualified individuals whose primary focus is student achievement while meeting the needs of the students at Spring Cove School District.
In agriculture production, you will find the 2008 Teacher of the Year, in business you will find FBLA national award winners, in consumer science you will find a brand new chapter of FCCLA, and in agriculture mechanics you will find teachers who know the tools of the trade.
The department takes pride in making sure that our students are prepared in attending college and entering the workforce. A sense of integrity, a high ethical standard, a firm knowledge and skill base, and learning how to work as a team are just a few characteristics that are taught in the Vocational Department.
Caring and giving to others is also part of the focus. Whether it be volunteering at various farm shows, raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes foundation, or wrapping gifts for the American Red Cross, our students are learning how to give back to the Spring Cove community.
As in the words of Forrest Gump, “I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is.” Not only will you find a group of smart well rounded teachers, but you will find a group of teachers who love what they do – teaching kids. “That’s all I have to say about that.”

Spring Cove School District: What does it mean to me? I can sum it up with three simple things. It’s unbridled commitment, excellent education, and lastly, strong family values. These are the things that make me proud to be a part of the Spring Cove School District.
As a wife of a retired military man, we have been in many different school districts. None of them have been so committed to making sure our children are learning everything they need to succeed in life. The Spring Cove staff goes above and beyond to make sure they have what they need to succeed.
The education the Cove provides is wonderful. Three of my four children have received the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. One of them won for Elementary and Middle School. The only reason the fourth hasn’t is he hasn’t finished elementary school yet. Intelligence may be something they are born with, or maybe, they get from their mother, but it has to be nurtured and challenged; something the staff here does tremendously.
Being a part of the Cove makes you feel like you are part of a big family. When there is tragedy, everyone mourns. When there is triumph, everyone celebrates. Everyone is always there to lend a helping hand. I grew up in North Carolina but I feel like I can call the Cove home.
I am more than proud to tell people, not only do my children attend Spring Cove School District, but I also work for them too. If you want a committed staff, an excellent education, and family values, then Spring Cove School District is truly the place to be.
