Recent Central High School graduates, Kristy Jackson and Stephanie Treece, represented CHS at the 2008 National Future Business Leaders of America Leadership Conference. The students were accompanied by CHS FBLA advisor Mrs. Kassi Leidy and CHS business teacher and Pennsylvania FBLA management team member, Mrs. Candace Claar. The event was held June 24-29 in Atlanta, Georgia. Over 7,000 students, advisers and parents were in attendance.
Kristy followed up her first place finish in spreadsheet applications at the Pennsylvania conference with a 10th place finish at the national conference. During the awards ceremony, Pennsylvania joined together cheering on all competitors from our state. Pennsylvania had a record-breaking year with the most competitors of any other state called to the stage - a total of fifty. Pennsylvania also had more 1st places than ever before a total of twelve.
In addition to the competitive events, Kristy and Stephanie were voting delegates helping to select national officers for the upcoming school year. The students and advisors listened to campaign speeches, visited campaign booths and had the opportunity to meet students running for the national offices. The students also enjoyed having the opportunity to meet students from other states. Kristy and Stephanie traded Pennsylvania pins for other state pins from students across the nation including Georgia, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Arizona.
The Future Business Leaders of America is a national career and technical student organization whose mission is to bring business and education together working through innovative leadership and career development programs. The 24 members in the Central High School chapter are a part of the Pennsylvania membership of over 13,500 members. You can find out more about FBLA by visiting the FBLA web site at www.pafbla.org.
