Mrs. Connie M. McClure, building secretary at Martinsburg Elementary School, was nominated for the Support Staff of the Year Award by Mrs. Candy Hoover, a teacher in that building. Mrs. McClure, who has worked for the district for 29 ½ years, plans to retire at the end of this school year. As Mrs. Hoover states, “Connie is truly an icon. Many cannot imagine the school without her. She makes the school a place where parents want their children to be. She often works unpaid overtime hours to complete her job. I can’t imagine just one person ever being able to replace her! Connie has adjusted over the years to changes in staff, parents, students, and procedures, and she always does so with grace. She will be greatly missed.”
Mrs. McClure began working for the Spring Cove School District on December 1, 1977 as a secretary at the Benson Elementary School in Martinsburg. When that school was closed, she moved to the new Martinsburg Elementary School. Mrs. McClure states that she stayed in this position over the years because of her love for children and the enjoyment she received from working with all the staff and parents. She reminisces about the many changes she has seen over the years, including Principals (“I have had many!”), technology, prices of books and supplies, building security, more working parents, etc.
Mrs. McClure was born and raised in Saxton. Her mother, Ruth Eichelberger, still lives in Saxton. Her father, Clair Eichelberger, is deceased. She has two brothers: John, who resides with his family in Burke, Virginia, and Jim, who lives with his family in Saxton.
Mrs. McClure and her husband, Don, live in Martinsburg and are the parents of three children: Brian, who resides in Illinois; Deb Marston, who resides in Stuarts Draft, Virginia, with her husband, Keith, and their two children Matthew and Marissa; and Kevin, who lives in Harleysville, with his wife, Diana, and their two children, Aidan and Lauren.
Mrs. McClure is looking forward to her retirement, effective June 30, 2007. She and her husband plan to do a lot of traveling, enjoy time with their grandchildren, and participate in volunteer work.
