Ornithologist

Introduction : My team is Tim, Daniel, and I am Alyssa.

Today you are going to become a
bluebird expert.

We have been hired as an
ornithologist
for Kid Camp

ORNITHOLOGIST =
A professional scientist who studies the lives and behaviors of birds

OUR Task was to research web sites and

 FIND OUT

1. Why bluebirds are in trouble

2. What bluebirds need to survive

3. How bluebirds raise their babies

4. How you can help the bluebird

Tim will explain why blue birds are in trouble.

We all know about blue birds, but most
don' t know is they are in serious trouble.

With every mall and highway there is a bluebird home lost. There are three types of blue birds: they are the western, eastern, and mountain blue bird.  The eastern blue bird is in our area.
   SOUND OF THE BIRDS

All of these birds are becoming extinct, but im not saying all constructing building is bad, we just have to think of different ways to help protected the blue bird. With that in mind let Alyssa tell you about how they raise their young, and what they need to survive.

Alyssa:

What blues need to survive are food, water, and shelter.

  • insects
  • berries
  • fruits
  • 60% - 80% is  insects
  • shelter is blue bird boxes
  • water because they bug eating birds

THEIR YOUNG:

  • 4-6 Eggs
  • Before used to nest in wooden posts
  • Like to nest in fields because that is were the bugs are
  • Males are like the instructors for the little birds.
  • They are very protective of their young
  • Before the eggs are hatched the males
              peck at windows.
  •  The nest (pass around)

THE BLUE BIRD BOX

As you heard Alyssa explain, some shelter for the blue birds is a blue bird box. So on a Summer Nature Day at Camp Pap helped us build blue bird boxes, that were donated to us by the  Pennsylvania Game Commision.  We called him PAP because he was Mrs. Schimmingers DAD, so that made him our PAP.

And as you can see on each of our boxes we made there is blue tag indicating HOME FOR THE WILD LIFE PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB.

Let me demonostrate how we built our blue bird box.

  • SHOW KIT.
  • Explain the Scratching and WHY
  • We Nailed all of the sides together except for the left side.

Because there is something special that about this side. YOU need to be able to open it up and clean it out yearly, So the bluebird will come back to nest again in the clean box.

Pap explained to us a trick so that other animals like racoons, and sparrow did not get in the box .. and  the trick is to drill a pilot hole and stick a nail to lock the door. And them this is where we open it up to clean it each year.  And the finished project looks like this.

Each kit has direction as to where to place the box... so that it is not in harm and we help the blue birds survive.

SO NOW DANIEL WILL EXPLAIN OUR CAMP FEATHER FRIEND.

Conclusion

We have completed our Bluebird Quest:

Now you should understand why bluebirds are in trouble,

what they need to survive,

how they raise their babies and

how you can help the bluebird.

And you might now even consider having a feather friend like TEKKI..

THANK YOU
