Sollenberger, Mrs. Lois-Family/Cons.Sci.

Welcome to Mrs. Sollenberger’s home page

The home of: Family and Consumer Sciences

I start my day with Basic Cooking, a great place to come and "get your feet wet" in the kitchen.  We will be learning about functioning well in the kitchen, as well as the importance of nutrition.   I teach a double period of Vocational Home Economics.  This class covers all the various areas of the total curriculum and meets for a full year.  As part of what we do in this class, we run a teachers' restaurant during the third marking period.  At the beginning of the school year we will be working on food preservation, and doing some things to enter in the Morrisons' Cove Fair.  I also teach Child Development where students learn the basics of taking care of children.  Students will have the opportunity to take home a "Real Care" baby (doll).  This doll is computer programmed to act like a real newborn baby and the student must respond to the baby's needs.  Another class that I have is called Independent Living, which is geared particularly toward seniors, getting ready to go out "into the real world".  They get to learn how to function in the kitchen as well as some other basic on-your-own skills.   This year I will be adding Culinary Diversity, where students will learn about the various influences on the foods that we eat.  We will be making foods from about 12 different countries over the course of the semester, and learning about the eating customs of all these different countries and hopefully trying some new and interesting dishes.  It is a challenge to teach 6 very different classes.

I will be slowly adding new information to these pages and creating links to other pages which will have more in-depth information about my curriculum.
